Comparison Test- Nokia Lumia 800 Vs Apple iPhone 4S

With as many as seven operating systems, bigger and better screens, features and applications; we have more options in buying a mobile phone than there was ever. As new Smartphone models are rolling into the market every second, it has become hard for us to decide where to invest our hard-earned money. To make this decision a bit easier, we have compared the two most popular phone models in the market- The Nokia Lumia 800 and Apple iPhone 4S.

The two phones are quite similar in many features. The main difference between these two Smart phones lies in the basic construction and the operating system.

The Apple iPhone 4S has a sophisticated design with abundant use of steel and glass. The main frame of the phone is made of steel while either side of the phone is laminated with glass for that classy look. A note here will be that this makes the phone quite delicate as well as a magnet for finger prints. It will be a good idea to use a phone cover in case you decide to get one. The Nokia lumia 800 on the other hand is made of poly-carbonated material on the lines of Nokia N9. This provides the phone with extra ruggedness at the same time makes the phone light weight. The shape of Nokia lumia 800 is quite ergonomic and easy to use. Also the unusual length and small width makes the phone easy to handle as well as use.


Nokia Lumia 800 comes with the latest in windows mobile- ‘The Windows 7.5 Mango’. Although Windows phone are not doing good business as compared to other OSs like- ‘Android’ and ‘iOS’, ‘The Mango’ may be Window’s savior in this context. Apple on the other hand comes with the latest A5 OS which Apple claims to be able to run graphics as much as seven times faster than its earlier models. Also one major feature which differentiates these two phones is the application- ‘Siri’ (which is an AI-based voice assistant) provided in the Apple iPhone 4S.

Other than these features there are minor differences in features provided in these two mobiles. Both the Apple iPhone and Nokia lumia 800 are quad-band, 3G and WiFi enabled phones. Both the phones have 512 MB internal RAM and do not support external memory cards. They are both available with 16 GB internal memory whereas the Apple has two more options with 32 GB and 64 GB memory storage.

Both the phones feature an 8MP camera with LED flash. However the Nokia Lumia 800 has a dual LED flash as against one in Apple iPhone 4S but lacks severely in one front- No secondary/front camera. So if you want to use the Lumia 800 for a video chat, then be ready with a mirror! Also video shooting from iPhone is better as it supports 1080p@ 30 frames per second as compared to a mere 720p@ 30 frames per second.

The batteries are also nearly same at about 1450mAh (Nokia Lumia 800) and 1430mAh. (Apple iPhone 4s) It can provide a decent battery backup for either of the phones, but an increase will be very much appreciated considering the large 3.7 inch screen and 3.5 inch large screens respectively.

Although the screen sizes are bit similar but writing (or more precisely dictating) in iPhone is definitely the winner. With Siri as an office assistant you can send long articles and emails which will be specially beneficial for Article Writing. (God, I’m fed up of typing, an iPhone 4S will be very much appreciated!)

One major defect with the Nokia lumia 800 is that the Bluetooth feature has restricted sharing. Hope Nokia checks this flaw through phone software updates.

Overall both the phones are quite good and anyone would be tempted to have their hands on one as soon as possible. Which phone to go for? The answer depends entirely upon individual preference(s).

How Does iCloud Work?

Apple’s release of its iOS 5 operating system changes the way people think about their files and other information. It features built-in support for cloud storage, meaning users can access all their files from almost anywhere.

Without adding any software, the iOS5 operating system has the ability to save files to Apple servers based on a user’s Apple ID. Users who download files to their phone or tablet can store them on their iCloud account to make them accessible to their computers and other devices. Saving file downloads to iCloud also conserves device storage space.

Setting up iDrive is easy. The first step requires users to make sure they have iOS 5 installed on their device. New devices should come with iOS 5 pre-installed. Users of many older iPhones, iPads and iPod Touchs can install the iOS 5 update via iTunes.

When booting an iOS 5 device for the first time, users should follow the onscreen setup sequence to enable iCloud. Users who skipped the setup process can tap the Settings icon on their home screen to run it.

On the iCloud settings window users can decide what services to use with iCloud. Options include Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Bookmarks, notes, Photo Stream, Documents and Data, and Find My iPhone. Users can also enable iBackup, a feature that backs up their entire device to iCloud when a Wi-Fi connection is available. Users can enable automatic downloads for their books, music and apps. Users can also choose whether the automatic downloads feature will use the mobile data network or only Wi-Fi.


Benefits and Limitations

The convenience of the iCloud service is clear: users can access their data from a centralized storage location. Never again will Apple users get caught without their photos, contacts, appointments or data files. Of course, the iCloud service has some limitations.

A computer hard drive is always accessible from a working computer. Files on iCloud are inaccessible in the event of a service outage or if a user finds himself or herself in a place with no network access. Users who forget to pay their bills can experience serious complications when trying to access their files.

Apple has a less-than-stellar reputation regarding privacy and security. Users should consider whether they should trust iCloud enough to store confidential or business-sensitive information.

The holiday shopping season is already upon us, when people head out to malls and browse numerous online retailers to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones. Technology changes quickly and new gadgets made for children seem to be released every few weeks, quickly making any purchases you make almost obsolete. What, then, could you safely buy a child that will keep them happy for years to come?

Here are four great gifts for children this holiday season:

1. iPod Touch

Everyone these days wants fast access to their music, videos, pictures, social network accounts, games and web browsing no matter where they are. This includes children. While it’s feasible to purchase a smartphone with these capabilities for an adult, it often doesn’t make sense to purchase one for a child. That’s where the iPod Touch comes in. With most of the same specs as the iPhone 4, the latest generation iPod sports 8, 32 or 64 GB of storage and full support for any iOS app that doesn’t require a constant data connection or GPS. With Wi-Fi, iCloud and iMessage, kids can access the Internet, synchronize their media and send/receive text messages from their mp3 player. 2. Nintendo Wii

In the past, video game consoles were one trick ponies. If you wanted to play video games, they were great, but you couldn’t browse the Internet, watch movies, check the weather or play any games that couldn’t physically fit in the system. With the latest generation of consoles, this trend was broken completely. The Wii, Nintendo’s flagship system, incorporates all of the previously-mentioned functions as well as a revolutionary control system that encourages players to get up and move around. Now parents no longer have to worry about their children just sitting and playing video games all day when they can play video games by moving around and being active.


3. Lego MINDSTORMS

Legos have long been a mainstay in the toy-boxes of children interested in building anything they can imagine. The Lego Mindstorms kits kick it up a notch, adding hardware and software that can be used to build and program robots. Suitable for older children interested in computers, technology and programming, these kits can be used to quickly construct simple robots and program them to perform small tasks, like rolling forward, turning around and rolling back. If you’re buying a present for a child interested in robotics, this is the gift for you!

4. Support a Cause

Rather than purchasing a gadget or game for a child, consider donating to a non-profit organization in their name. You could donate to provide clean water to people in Africa, purchase a wheelchair lift for a local non-profit that helps people with disabilities or sponsor a child through an organization like Compassion International or World Vision. Whatever you do, pick a cause the child may be interested in or has a connection with and sit down with them to discuss what that donation will be used for. If you receive a thank you letter or a donation certificate, frame it and give it to the child so they’ll have a tangible reminder of the good work that’s being done in their name.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs resigned as CEO recently because of ongoing issues with his health. The designs of the products are like nothing else available on the market today. The products have generated rave reviews and genuine customer loyalty. In a world where technology adapts and evolves lightning quick, Jobs, time and time again was in front of it all.
