Search engines use complicated algorithms for the ranking of pages in the search results. The latest update to the algorithms is aimed at improving the quality of results given and giving those “black hat websites” a well deserved decrease in rank. This latest update is known as the Google Penguin Update.
The job of this renovation is to curb web spam. This means that all violators of the code of conduct set by Google will have their rankings reduced or their sites totally blacklisted from the index if they fail to comply.
One big problem that web designers will have to overcome is… in the process of creating a website “trying to beat the competition” is over optimization. With the surfacing of this new update over optimization will surely take them out of the game.
There are several other guidelines that the search engine giant released to help you in this process of optimization the right way. Not following these steps will be detected by this penguin update immediately.
Another thing to mention along with initial designing of a site, is trying to avoid keyword stuffing at all costs. Rule of thumb: try not to use your keyword more than 3 times per post or your site may also be viewed as spam.
Another bad habit that should be avoided is the use of hidden keywords and hidden links. Obviously not new but important to mention is the use of viruses and trojans should also be discouraged. Never use unauthorized programs to send an automated query to the search engine in a bid to increase the ranking of your site i.e. prohibited with the new algorithm is gold.
Do not create sub-domains or pages that contain irrelevant information on your website. Moreover, creation of several pages with duplicate content should be avoided as well. Fresh and unique content will always be your best bet with this update.
In an effort to make sure their website is optimized for the search engine, most web designers forget the most basic of web or software design in general. That is, one should always design the site with ease of use in mind. One should not deceive their users by presenting false information to users and search engine…to improve traffic to the website.
Avoiding some of the listed no-nos aimed at improving your rankings the wrong way. Includes spamming and use of sneaky linking and redirects to fool the search engine that your site has many other sites linking to it. Instead create websites that contain high quality content that will attract users hence increasing your rankings in a natural way.
Buying anchor text for links to your website from other websites with related content should be carried out with care. Your links can ultimately be viewed as a spammy method to increase page rank. This will lead to the algorithm disregarding the links when calculating your page rank. You should also reduce your posts on questionable sites as this will lead to blacklisting of your site by the penguin algorithm.
Despite all the benefits of cleaning up the search results, Google Penguin Update has some errors. One of the common to note includes strange rankings such as sites without relevant content being displayed on the first page while the most relevant pages fall down the rankings. However the good outweighs the bad as this update does well with filling in the loopholes that were exploited by malicious websites before.

Google’s new update is mainly about spamming and over optimization. According to a report, it is said that a webpage having more than 25% back links on its keyword/key-phrase may be paralyzed by Google under this update i.e. back links must use natural anchor text.

I’m starting to think our websites will never be safe until Google runs out of black and white animals to name updates after!

Considering that it’s mostly weeding out those engaged in non-ethical SEO or those over-optimized sites which lack quality and value, I think this will push people to concentrate on quality content more than anything.

“Do not create sub-domains or pages that contain irrelevant information on your website.” Sub-domains have been a hobgoblin for some time now. And it’s right to point out irrelevant information harms a site’s search rank–especially after Penguin.

If you are posting contents regularly and doing proper link building your site will be safe from any Google update. It’s all about making your site friendly and useful for people. Most of my competitors have wiped away as only depend on the backlinks not the contents.

Great blog entry! By all indications, Google intends to weed out low value results from the search results. Getting your content quality up now offers one of the best opportunities to protect your site from future changes. Structure the site so that the user is able to locate the information and/or content they are looking for; with the least amount of hassle, as possible.

Despite Google’s claims Penguin has issues. We are still seeing sites out there using the old duplicate content via sub domains / page directories that haven’t been penguinated. Also some long term black hat rankers are still in place as well. Maybe they will improve things in the next updates, or maybe they won’t. Either way the goal posts for marketing companies have been pulled in closer.
