Why is Social media becoming less social? Trying to understand this could be an ideal way to grab someone’s attention when on a site… but are you one that is publishing ads everywhere on the website?
Think about it!
What about the other half of the social universe who joined the network to speak to friends and family who are far away.
…Do you really think they want to see your best sales pitch?
Did you know?
There has been a drastic drop in new users who visit websites to see and make updates completely unrelated to business.
…So why has the social universe become a plethora of sales pitches and not social engagement?
The whole purpose of this interactive medium formed was to bridge the gap of communication and restore the conversations that friends and family have, just like in person. This means, no matter where others are located in the world– the social website gives persons the feeling that they visited them yesterday.
If someone living in another country was unable to attend their best friend’s wedding, the pictures of the event are displayed that tells a story and makes the best friend see every detail. Businesses equally had their share of exchanging information and the site was very balanced.
But this is not the case anymore.
All these new businesses produced daily infested these websites and made it no longer fun and interactive for the users NOT interested in your ads. Anywhere the user clicks is an advertisement about trying some product or service and the sad reality is that sometimes these are of little relevance to the viewer’s interest.
New user registrations have significantly dropped from 13.6 million in April to 11.8 million in the following months. The interest of persons registering for these websites have noticeably dropped and the craving for interacting online is not as demanding as previous times. This also means the number of visits or traffic is going down and of course traffic is an important feature and highlight for these interactive sites.
Seeing a fancy looking advertisement pop-up on the viewer’s profile is not as appealing as these vendors and advertisements think. Many try to ignore the advertisement and go about their normal intention and that is having fun and conversing online.
For some personal sites, they are somewhat safe, at least for now, but the other less dominant players are beginning to wonder why the strategy is not working. The websites today are appearing like a business setting and that is unappealing to viewers.
Absolutely nothing is wrong with keeping the members abreast with the current affairs and advertisements, maybe it will grab their interest. However, over-populating the website with more promotions and less things related to the site can lose viewers rapidly.

i agree with you but if you are “lurking”on social networking long enough, you tend to go ad blind but this is how the web runs now they have to do this because there is money involved in running a site much more with a social networking sites

Social media is about interaction. Attraction marketing works in social media online, people will be attracted to people or company who provide values first and engaging conversation. sales pitch looks unattractive. You made an excellent review about social media.

We are also becoming less social too. Observe the people you see everyday. Even with their families and friends, they make themselves busy on Facebook and Twitter.
